Spring Pet Grooming Guide: Getting pet ready for the season!

KiKi’s Nails2Tails – Mobile Grooming in St. Thomas & Surrounding Areas

Now that winter is finally backing off and we’re starting to see some sunshine again (thank goodness 😅), it’s the perfect time to reset your pet’s grooming routine.

Winter can be a bit rough on our pets—longer coats, dry skin, less regular grooming, and then suddenly spring hits… and it’s shedding, mud, and everything in between.

So let’s talk about what your pet actually needs this time of year and how to keep them feeling their best 🐾

🐶 The Shedding… It’s Coming

If you’ve already noticed more fur around your house—you’re not imagining it.

In spring, pets start to “blow” their winter coat. It’s a natural process, but it can get out of hand quickly if it’s not managed.

All that loose fur can:

  • Turn into matting pretty fast

  • Trap dirt and moisture close to the skin

  • Make your pet uncomfortable

Brushing helps a ton here—but not all brushes are the same. I always use different tools depending on the coat and take my time, especially with thicker or sensitive coats.

🐾 Nail Trims (Especially with More Walks)

With the nicer weather, pets are moving more—walks, yard time, adventures.

If nails are too long, it can actually change how they walk and put pressure on their joints. Plus, they can snag or split (which is never fun).

A good little check:

If you hear nails clicking on the floor… it’s time ✂️

🌼 Ears & Spring Allergies

Spring brings all the good stuff… and all the itchy stuff too.

Pollen, dust, moisture—it can all build up in your pet’s ears and cause:

  • Wax buildup

  • Smell

  • Head shaking or scratching

I always say—ears are one of those things that are easy to stay on top of, but not fun to fix once there’s a problem.

🐕 Winter Coat → Spring Coat

After winter, I see a lot of:

  • Dry, flaky skin

  • Dull coats

  • Little hidden mats that weren’t obvious before

A good groom helps get rid of all that buildup and gets the coat back to healthy again.

And just a quick note—shaving isn’t always the answer, especially for double-coated dogs. Most of the time, proper brushing does way more for them.

🐾 Mud Season (We’re All Living It 😅)

Let’s be honest… spring is messy.

All that fur between paw pads? It holds onto mud, water, everything.

Quick paw trims and tidy-ups:

  • Keep your house a little cleaner

  • Keep your pet more comfortable

  • Help prevent irritation

Same goes for sanitary areas—just keeping things clean and easy to manage.

🐰 Small Pets Need Care Too

I’ll say it every time—small pets get overlooked way too often.

Bunnies, guinea pigs, and other little ones still need:

  • Nail trims

  • Brushing (especially during shedding)

  • Gentle, regular care

Especially with rabbits—too much loose fur can actually cause issues if they ingest it while grooming themselves.

🏡 What you do between appointments makes a huge difference.

Simple things help:

• 🪮 Brushing a few times a week

• 🐾 Checking paws and nails

• 👂 Keeping an eye on ears

And if you find a mat—don’t try to cut it out. They sit close to the skin and it’s easy to accidentally nick them. I’ve got you on those.

💛 When It’s Time to Call a Groomer

At-home care is amazing—but there are definitely times where it’s best (and safest) to bring in a professional.

Here are some signs your pet could use a groom:

  • You’re noticing matting or tangles forming

  • Shedding feels out of control

  • Nails are long, thick, or hard to trim

  • There’s buildup or smell in the ears

  • Your pet seems uncomfortable, itchy, or sensitive

  • You’re just not sure where to start

And honestly—sometimes it’s just about having someone come in, take their time, and make the whole experience easier for both you and your pet.

That’s exactly what I’m here for.

🚗 Why I Do In-Home Grooming

Spring can be a lot—more noise, more activity, more stimulation.

That’s why I love offering in-home grooming. Your pet gets:

  • A calm, familiar space

  • One-on-one attention

  • A much more relaxed experience overall

Especially for nervous pets, seniors, or little guys—it makes such a difference.
